THEN AND NOW – HONORING A LEGACY

In 2017, a coalition of public and private partners embarked on an effort to save and restore the small hospital originally built by the nation’s first Native American physician, Susan La Flesche Picotte, MD. Today, renovation is well underway, with the first two phases of the three-phase project fully funded and nearly complete.

The Phase I installation of a new roof was completed in 2019, with a $50,000 grant from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC). Phase II focuses on the exterior restoration of the Picotte Center, with completion expected by mid-April.

This restoration has included removal of non-original siding materials that have been added over the 111-year life of the former hospital. The original wood lap siding and trim were repaired and repainted. Original windows were removed, restored and replaced.

Phase III will begin in mid-2022 to restore the interior and complete development of the site, at an expected cost of $2.5 million. A fundraising campaign will launch in June. To learn more about Dr. Susan, and ways you can support this unique and inspiring project, visit drsusancenter.org
